Hailed by CNN as “one of the top ensembles of today,” Sejong Soloists is an internationally acclaimed chamber orchestra known for its refined ensemble sound, distinctive programming, and long-standing commitment to artistic innovation.
Founded in 1994 by Juilliard professor Hyo Kang, the ensemble began when Kang invited eleven prize-winning young artists from eight countries to form a new kind of string orchestra —one built on shared leadership, precision, and the intimacy of chamber music. From its inaugural performance at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Sejong quickly drew international attention, soon becoming ensemble-in-residence at the Aspen Music Festival.
Over three decades, Sejong Soloists has grown into one of the most distinctive chamber orchestras on the international stage. The ensemble has performed more than 700 concerts in 120 cities worldwide, with repeated appearances at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Suntory Hall, and major European venues. At Carnegie Hall alone, Sejong has appeared 21 times. Its performances have also marked major global events, including the 2002 FIFA Congress for the World Cup, the 2004 Olympic Torch Ceremony at the United Nations, and the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, where Sejong served as Honorary Ambassador.
Sejong has commissioned and premiered 17 new works. Collaborations with Gil Shaham, Vadim Repin, Ian Bostridge, Joyce DiDonato, and other distinguished artists have shaped its distinctive programming. In partnership with MIT Media Lab, Sejong commissioned and premiered Tod Machover’s Overstory Overture in 2023 and Flow Symphony in 2024, continuing its commitment to works that connect music with the ideas of our time.
Sejong’s impact is also reflected in the musicians who have passed through its ranks. Members and alumni now hold concertmaster positions at the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the Montreal Symphony, and the Hamburg Philharmonic, as well as faculty positions at Juilliard and Yale.
In 2024, Sejong celebrated its 30th anniversary with a Carnegie Hall festival featuring premieres by Augusta Read Thomas, Unsuk Chin, and Texu Kim. Today, through international performances and its annual Hic et Nunc! Festival in Seoul, Sejong Soloists continues to stand at the intersection of tradition, innovation, and artistic leadership.
